New Members Welcome

Our Purpose

We are a local club for retired or semi-retired gentlemen. We meet at a nice pub on the 3rd Thursday of each month for lunch, which includes a speaker addressing a wide range of subjects. We also organize visits to places of interest and have a program of events such as skittles and quizzes.

Who We Are

We aim to create lasting friendships and provide a vibrant social calendar for retired and semi-retired professional gentlemen. Join us for delightful lunches and a variety of engaging, sociable activities.

Lunches at West Sussex Golf Club are very popular

South Downs Probus Club recently had their Summer lunch with their wives as well as the associate members at The West Sussex Golf Club as in the picture. It was the first meeting following the retirement of the President for the last two years, Don Johnston, and the installation of this year’s President, David Brewerton. Don is grateful that some members of his Committee have remained to provide continuity to the proceedings of the club and also to some new members taking office to ensure that all the events in which they participate do run smoothly. David Brewerton was a Chartered Civil Engineer and brings his own charm and leadership skills to the Presidency. In the coming months we have a guided visit to Firle Place followed by a pub lunch and then in August the annual inter-Probus Croquet match takes place at Southwick Croquet Club. This is always a great day of competitive fun and also includes an excellent buffet lunch put on by the Croquet Club. In September we are off on The Bluebell Railway for a day out. And each month we have the members lunches which are at The George & Dragon near Shipley and are addressed by a speaker on an eclectic range of subjects. Last month a group of members had a guided tour of Loseley House. The guide’s astonishing detailed knowledge of the house and all its history was very impressive and really brought the place to life. So many interesting facts, stories, pictures, furniture and lovely modern portraits of the family as well. And the gardens! The Head Gardener showed us round to see each garden at its best. The rose garden was spectacular. The perennial gardens, the herb garden, the white garden and the immaculate fruit and veg area, finishing up along the first Queen Elizabeth's walk! Fantastic.
